simple syrup recipe Hibiscus Ruby Infusion
- Total Time: 110 minutes
- Yield: Approximately 3 cups syrup 1x
- Diet: Vegan, Gluten-Free
Description
This Hibiscus Ruby Infusion simple syrup offers a vibrant, tart-sweet flavor, perfect for elevating beverages and providing a natural alternative to artificial sweeteners. It is easy to prepare on the stovetop and suitable for family-friendly drinks or wellness-focused diets.
Ingredients
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups granulated sugar (or maple syrup, honey, monk fruit for low-carb options; adjust amount as needed)
- 0.5 cup dried hibiscus flowers (or rosehips, dried berries for different fruit notes)
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced (or 0.5 tsp dried ginger powder, or star anise)
- Strips from 0.5 orange peel (or lemon peel, lime peel)
Instructions
- Combine Water and Sugar: In a medium saucepan, combine 2 cups water and 2 cups granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar fully dissolves and the liquid is clear (about 5 minutes), avoiding vigorous boiling.
- Infuse Flavors: Remove the saucepan from the heat immediately. Add 0.5 cup dried hibiscus flowers, the sliced fresh ginger, and the orange peel to the hot syrup.
- Steep and Cool: Let the mixture steep for 15-20 minutes, or longer (up to 25 minutes for a deeper ruby hue and flavor).
- Strain and Store: Carefully strain the simple syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean, heat-proof glass jar. Press down on the solids with the back of a spoon to extract all remaining liquid, then discard the spent solids.
- Chill Completely: Allow the simple syrup to cool completely to room temperature before sealing the jar tightly and refrigerating. The syrup will thicken slightly as it cools.
Notes
For a deeper ruby hue and more intense flavor, steep the hibiscus longer (up to 25 minutes). If your final beverage tastes too sweet, a small squeeze of lemon juice can balance it. For vegan suitability, ensure that the granulated sugar used is bone-char free. Store refrigerated in an airtight container.
