- Yield: 10 servings 1x
- Diet: General
Description
This hoagie dip recipe is a creamy, savory appetizer bursting with classic deli flavors, topped with an aromatic, crispy Za’atar Crunch. It’s a crowd-pleasing, budget-friendly dish perfect for game day or any gathering, offering a balance of delicious taste and simple preparation.
Ingredients
- 8.8 ounces full-fat cream cheese, softened
- 0.5 cup mayonnaise
- 6 ounces provolone cheese, finely shredded
- 4 ounces deli-sliced roasted turkey breast, finely diced
- 4 ounces deli-sliced roast beef, finely diced
- 0.5 small red onion, very finely diced (about 2 ounces)
- 0.5 green bell pepper, very finely diced (about 2.6 ounces)
- 1 jarred roasted red bell pepper, well-drained and finely diced (about 3.5 ounces)
- 0.25 cup pickled banana peppers, well-drained and finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 0.5 teaspoon dried oregano
- 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
- 0.25 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 0.5 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon za’atar spice blend
- 0.5 teaspoon sumac
- 0.5 teaspoon black sesame seeds
- 0.25 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped, for garnish
Instructions
- Create the Creamy Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and mayonnaise. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until smooth and creamy (about 2 minutes), scraping down bowl sides.
- Fold in Savory Mix-ins: Add shredded provolone, diced turkey, diced roast beef, diced red onion, diced green bell pepper, diced roasted red bell pepper, and chopped pickled banana peppers to the cream cheese mixture. Gently fold until evenly distributed.
- Season the Dip: Sprinkle in garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and black pepper. Stir well to thoroughly combine.
- Chill for Flavor Development: Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or ideally overnight, for flavors to meld and dip to firm up.
- Prepare the Za’atar Crunch: While dip chills, heat olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add panko breadcrumbs and toast, stirring frequently, until golden brown and crisp (3-5 minutes).
- Flavor the Crunch: Remove skillet from heat. Stir za’atar, sumac, and black sesame seeds into the toasted panko. Spread onto a plate to cool completely.
- Assemble the Dip: Just before serving, transfer chilled dip to a wide, shallow serving bowl. Gently create a slightly textured surface.
- Garnish and Serve: Scatter Za’atar Crunch generously over the center of the dip, leaving some dip visible. Finish with a vibrant sprinkle of finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley.
Notes
For a lighter dip, use low-fat cream cheese and mayonnaise, or extra lean turkey. For gluten-free, ensure all ingredients are certified GF and serve with veggie sticks or GF crackers. For vegetarian, omit meats and add extra roasted red peppers, olives, or marinated artichoke hearts. Use fresh, crisp bell peppers and red onion for best crunch. Ask deli for freshly sliced meats. To save time, use pre-chopped veggies or chop them the night before. Make the dip the night before for deeper flavors. If dip is too thick after chilling, stir in a tablespoon of milk or more mayonnaise. For a stronger onion flavor, mellow red onion in a dash of vinegar for 10 minutes before adding.
